Hotel Sanders brings residential Nordic warmth to a 54-room Neoclassical hideaway beside the Royal Danish Theatre, with a leafy courtyard, rooftop conservatory and one of Copenhagen’s most atmospheric cocktail bars.
Hotel Sanders feels more like a stylish Copenhagen townhouse than a conventional luxury hotel. The 54-room property occupies a Neoclassical building opposite the Royal Danish Theatre and was created by former principal ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin, giving the hotel an unusually personal connection to the city’s cultural life.
The design avoids stark Scandinavian minimalism in favor of richer, more residential layering. Wood, wicker, muted greens, vintage-inspired furniture and tactile fabrics make rooms feel collected over time rather than installed as a matching set.
Public spaces are a major part of the appeal. Sanders Kitchen serves meals throughout the day, the leafy courtyard becomes a natural gathering place in good weather, and the glass-covered rooftop offers a bright, quiet perch above the street.
Tata Cocktail Bar adds a different mood after dark, channeling a glamorous mid-century lounge with classic cocktails and intimate seating. Complimentary bicycles make it easy to extend the hotel’s relaxed sensibility into the surrounding city.
The location is excellent for travelers who want to explore Copenhagen on foot: Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv and central shopping are all close. Sanders is especially compelling for guests who value atmosphere and individuality over the predictability of a large international brand.
