Hyakuna Garan is a secluded adults-oriented Okinawan retreat with just 17 ocean-view rooms and suites, traditional limestone architecture, rooftop open-air baths and a remarkable sense of stillness on the island’s southern coast.
Hyakuna Garan sits directly above a quiet stretch of sea on the southern side of Okinawa’s main island, far from the denser resort zones to the north. Traditional limestone walls, coral-red roofs and open corridors connect the architecture closely to the island’s Ryukyu heritage.
The property is deliberately small, with 14 executive rooms and three suites, all oriented toward the ocean. Interiors are restrained and natural, and several accommodations incorporate tatami, private gardens or terraces that make the scenery feel like part of the room.
One of the most memorable features is the collection of private rooftop houjouan. These secluded spaces can be reserved by guests for open-air bathing with an uninterrupted view of the sea, especially beautiful around sunrise or sunset.
Dining focuses on Japanese cuisine interpreted through Okinawan ingredients such as local seafood, seaweed, tropical produce and awamori. A spa, meditation spaces and the mature banyan trees around the property reinforce the overall sense of retreat.
Hyakuna Garan is best for travelers who want a quieter, more culturally specific version of Okinawa. There is little interest in creating a conventional beach-resort scene; the appeal is privacy, architecture, ocean light and a strong connection to the island’s southern landscape.
