Pulitzer Amsterdam stretches across 25 interconnected 17th- and 18th-century canal houses between Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. Rather than hiding the irregularity of those buildings, the hotel makes their staircases, level changes and unexpected corridors part of the experience.

Every room and suite differs in size, shape and outlook, reflecting the quirks of the original houses. Jacu Strauss’s redesign uses Dutch craftsmanship, antiques, contemporary color and playful references to the merchants and residents who once occupied the buildings.

At the center sits a surprisingly peaceful garden courtyard, creating a pocket of green behind the canal façades. The Beauty House adds a small-scale wellness component without trying to turn the property into a conventional spa hotel.

Jansz. serves polished but approachable modern cooking, Pulitzer’s Bar is one of Amsterdam’s most atmospheric cocktail destinations, and the garden becomes a valuable open-air social space in warmer weather. The hotel also operates its own classic salon boat for canal cruising.

Pulitzer is ideal for travelers who want Amsterdam’s architecture to be inseparable from the stay. Its maze of historic buildings may be less predictable than a purpose-built hotel, but that is exactly what gives the property its charm and sense of place.
