San Ysidro Ranch sits high in the Montecito foothills beneath the Santa Ynez Mountains, surrounded by citrus, olive trees, sycamores and landscaped gardens. The property has welcomed guests since the 19th century and remains associated with figures ranging from Winston Churchill to John and Jackie Kennedy.

Only 38 bungalow-style cottages are spread across the 550-acre estate, giving the ranch an extraordinary amount of land per guest. Each cottage has a private entrance and adjacent parking, while interiors combine antiques, original art, stone fireplaces, four-poster beds, soaking tubs and outdoor rain showers.

The Ranch supports a full resort day without ever feeling busy. Guests have access to a heated pool, spa and salon, fitness studio, yoga, mini golf, bicycles and roughly 17 miles of hiking trails through the surrounding foothills.

Dining is now unusually generous because award-winning meals are complimentary with every overnight stay, excluding alcohol. The Stonehouse occupies a 19th-century citrus packing house, while the intimate Speakeasy offers cocktails and nightly live music; the wine cellar holds roughly 16,000 bottles.

San Ysidro Ranch is best for travelers who want privacy at a level even most luxury resorts cannot provide. The cottage layout, enormous grounds and included dining make it feel more like staying on a private Montecito estate than checking into a hotel.
